Even when shutdown, gas turbines continue to suffer serious damage.
The slow rotational speed associated with windmilling is insufficient to generate the centrifugal force required to prevent blade chatter.
Prolonged periods of windmilling can destroy turbine blading.
Windmill damage can cost upwards of £0.25M to repair.
Designed to compliment the Posiflo retrofit programme, TCL have developed an Anti-Windmill Brake.
It fits in place of the fuel pump and uses a solenoid operated disk brake to apply sufficient decelerating torque to stop the windmilling gas generator. Systems are included to prevent brake application whilst the engine is fired.
